Paper Princess has the right idea, but too many seams for my liking. To elongate the middle also, I'd do it this way, and as others have said, the alternate block has to be the mirror image:

I'm posting this again because the previous pic is a little blurry. The ends of the horizontal strips can just be snowballed to achieve the effect of the quilt |
