I was thinking that fleece as backing would be a little too thick to machine quilt on my dsm if I added a layer of batting.

But I'm not sure it will still have the quilty feel if I don't use batting.

What have you done? What do you think? I picked up several yards a few years ago on a JoAnn's black friday sale.

I make a lot of quilts for children and they do like the fleece backings when they pick their quilts.

I don't...but I am self taught, so may do lots of things wrong.

Maybe others do, but I do not use additional batting when I am using fleece for the backing. You are going to have enough "control" issues without that additional layer of smart-a** getting in the way. :-)

I never have, either. IT's thick enough and will still feel like a quilt.

I think it would be too thick. The fleece alone makes a nice backing to a quilt top.

I've done both (using a thin batting). But I've found just using the fleece usually is enough.

Yeah! I was hoping that was the answer!

I've done several fleece backed baby quilts but did not use batting. The fleece is enough by itself especially if you do a flannel top.

I don't add batting due to the warmth that is already created with the fleece.

it's a personal choice- fleece backing is plenty warm enough and (lofty) enough with out batting- some people like really heavy quilts- they use batting in theirs.
