My daughter is a social worker and has 15 foster care children she supervises. I told her I will try to make each one a quilt for christmas. There are 7 boys and 8 girls ages 3-15. If any of you know of any quick big block patterns that will help me accomplish this I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks
Jan

Luckily I bought a bunch of fabric at walmart a few months ago for $1-$2/ yard in bright happy prints.

You AND your daughter are very special women :)

Here are some of my favorite patterns (and ones I want to try)... I put the measurements, because you might need some bigger ones for the bigger kids....

http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransso...ice-quilt.html (38" x 53")

http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/10/boxed-in-quilt.html (50" x 50" ) -- This is a layer cake project, but would be very easy to modify for yardage...actually, it would probably be easier to start from yardage than a LC.

http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/02/...aby-quilt.html 41" x 50". ( I have made this one more than once...goes super quickly with chain piecing!)

gaigai 11-16-2010 03:22 PM

Make them single layer fleece. Or you can make one layer fleece, one layer flannel and strip cut the edges of both and tie them together. Then just quilt whatever design you want. Fast and easy. In this case you definitely need to follow the KISS principle. Good luck.

Katia 11-16-2010 03:39 PM

I think I would be asking my daughter to come over and help. That sounds like a lot of work.

justwannaquilt 11-16-2010 03:58 PM

Go to the quilt for kids website and use their pattern. It is easy to cut, quick to put together, and easy to quilt if you are wanting to make actual quilts. I smashed two tops out in a little more than an hour by chain piecing. The quilting can be really simple diagonal lines from block corner to corner!

mic-pa 11-16-2010 03:58 PM

I would purchase panels and put a border on each one. Quick and easy.

jetnica 11-16-2010 04:01 PM

you have the best heart --

if you haven't tried the dissappearing 9-patch - go for that. looks super fancy, but is really easy!

klgreene 11-16-2010 04:14 PM

What about the 10 min. block. You can make the quilts to fit the kids.

Wow--I don't have any suggestions; just want to say how much I admire her!

redquilter 11-16-2010 04:20 PM

Others have come up with good suggestions, so I'll just say
God Bless you. It's a wonderful thing you're doing.

Jennifer22206 11-16-2010 04:23 PM

What about strip quilts? Like if you had 3 or 4 inch strips by WOF and sewed them together for a quick quilt. Could do a quick SID if you wanted to.

Or panels with a border.

That's all I can think of right now. You're amazing for doing this!

That is a good idea. I made several like that with Deb Umphress at the Project Lionel booth at Quilt Fest. If you PM Deb, she can give you some really cute, really fast ideas.

CompulsiveQuilter 11-16-2010 05:43 PM

I bought the pattern from Clotilde, but it's basically one Huge log cabin block, toddler size. Very cute, very easy. If you want to buy the pattern, it's called "Baby Steps"

littlehud 11-16-2010 06:31 PM

What an amazing thing to do. You are Santa Clause. Those kids are going to love them.

pocoellie 11-16-2010 06:45 PM

Quilter's Cache has large blocks, 16" and larger.

Ditto....I'm making them right now and it takes no time to make. I just used the same material in the middle. She also shows other blocks to make in another video.

twistedstitcher 11-16-2010 08:30 PM

This is my favorite for a quick quilt. It goes together really quickly and the size can easily be adjusted.

You are all so great, thanks. My daughter doesn't sew and I offered and of course she is thrilled to have something special for them. She can do the wrapping.

You are Santa & everyone loves Santa. Good luck to you

Sewze 11-16-2010 09:28 PM

What a great undertaking for you to do this for these children. Good luck to you and God bless you.

Wow, what an undertaking! The 10 minute block is super for girls...making on right now with my granddaughter. We used 10 1/2 inch blocks, so 10 minutes later we have 20 1/2 inch blocks! Super easy...it was shared a couple weeks ago on this forum. Go to YouTube and type in 10 minute quilt block.

#1piecemaker 11-17-2010 04:57 AM

Whatever you choose, the kids will love them made with bright colorful fabrics!!! Good luck on your project. God Bless.

thseabreze 11-17-2010 04:58 AM

I made one of these 10 minute blocks last night just to see how it turns out...I am happy with it, easy to do, and very quick.

ga447 11-17-2010 06:18 AM

I do quilts for charity and we make the front 60 x 80 and cut out 10 1/2 squares. I make the back and middle using sheets and then we tie each square. I go to the goodwill/charity shops for fabric. I got 2 large bags of fabric for 4 dollars. I also ask friends I know if they have any square fabric. Hobby Lobby has some fabric for $2.00 a yard at times. The quilts really come out beautiful. The quilts keep them warm.

foxxigrani 11-17-2010 06:45 AM

Large 4 or 9 patch go together nicely, look nice and can be chain pieced. I too want to honor you on for your generous heart Bless you.

lillybeck 11-17-2010 07:13 AM

Whatever you do will be wonderful for those children. God bless you and your daughter both.

stitchofclass2 11-17-2010 07:22 AM

What a wonderful idea. Have you made the "no-sew" fleece blankets? They are, what I call, "Comfort blankets!" You square up two pieces of contrasting fleece (one solid and one print), make yourself a template out of a file folder so that you can cut up to 4 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch strips on each edge and cutting out a 4 1/2 inch square at the corners. Then tie the upper and bottom layer strips together using an overhand knot. This makes a cute fringe and Viola no sewing. You can do two in a day or more. They take me about 2 hours to trim up, cut slits and tie.

quilterjody 11-17-2010 07:26 AM

you can do ragged-edge quilts. Those go together very quick and the quilting is done as you go. So your daughter doesn't sew...I bet she can learn to use a rotary cutter. :-D I bet she knows how to operate an iron. It's amazing how quickly piecing can be done if someone else is pressing for you. Bless you for taking on this project.

benson1 11-17-2010 07:54 AM

what about making quillows they are just two pieces fabric 2yrd front and 2 yrd back put binding in and flip and you can make a pillow for the to go along and quilt will fit in it hope this is a good suggestion
mary

justflyingin 11-17-2010 08:08 AM

I do quite a few charity quilts. If you had preprinted panels of Batman or Spiderman for boys ages 5-10, they'd LOVE em if you made them big enough for a quilt.

But whatever you do, be aware that a 15 year old is going to appreciate your work a lot more than a 3 year old. I'd make them accordingly.

ThAnk you all so much,it makes me feel like I can make this happen. I have a quillow patter. Have a great thanksgiving, I have many more things to be thankful for. One of the member here has offered 4 quilts to help me. Doesn't that make you cry? There are really Angels here on earth.

JANW 11-17-2010 08:55 AM

Looks like the messages I thought I lost are coming up. Not as easy on a Blackberry.

BellaBoo 11-17-2010 09:06 AM

Here is the pattern I use for a super fast nice looking quilt.

I make it as big or small as I need it to be.

http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns_d...er/patt230.pdf

I use this pattern for backing for most of my quilts too.

Look at page 3 for more pictures of the quilts.

Bless you and your daughter for helping kids in need.

Someone posted the Quilter's Cache site for kids quilts and
it gave me an idea for 2 baby girl quilts I need to make. So
to that person thank you.
