I have been wondering this for a long time, but a fat quarter really isn't enough to do much with in a quilt. It is fine if you are doing a scrappy type quilt, but when doing a quilt that is larger and you use 8-10 different fabrics, a fat quarter is like "nothing".

Why do so many people seem so focused on buying fat quarters? I do scrappy quilts--and will continue to do them, with scraps, mostly, not purchased fat quarters.

So, I'm wondering, what do you all do with your fat quarters? Do you buy more than one of the same, and if so, why not just buy 1/2 yard or more of yardage?

I'm brand new so I have been stocking up on them to help me build a stash. For me the fat quarters are like alot of peoples "scraps". I have had to buy a ton of them the last couple of months to do the boomerang swap and different paper piecing projects. I now have a nice set of blenders from FQs :D

I wasn't very excited about fat quarters until I made a quilt from Eleanor Burns Quick Quarter Quilts book. I liked it so well I can't wait to make another one and I'm finding all kinds of fat quarter collections I love.

There are some great patterns that you can use fat quarters with....I use them to also build my stash! Sometimes the fat quarters that I find, don't come in yardage, so I will buy more than one if I have a certain project in mind and I need more... :)

My stash consists mostly of fat quarters. I like scrappy quilts and that is how I quilt. Even the quilt behind my little girls has multiple different oranges, greens and even different whites. I like the feel of quilts that are not perfect matchy match and fat quarters force you to do that.

I kind of wondered about that to. If I really like the fabric or it fits perfectly what I need, I will end up wishing I had more. But at the rate I finish projects it will be practically old fashioned by then.

I love buying FQs too, especially fabric collections which are so pretty, I'll want to own one of each design. I buy them too to build up my stash for future FQ projects. There are actually many gorgeous projects you could find online or in books dedicated for FQs.

I use fat quarters for small triangles; tumblers or strips...I love some of the patterns too so it's worth cutting!

Why use 1 red when you can use 20? A lot of times if I'm doing a quilt with repeated blocks instead of using just one fabric I'll use several. It gives the quilt personality. Fat quarters are a measured amount and I know I can pull four out and they're a yard.

I have done a couple of quilts that were really fat quarter friendly too. I pulled 10 yellow, 10 orange, and 10 pink fat quarters from my stash and made the queen size Orion Star Thangles quilt. Beats paying $200 for the kit! And I like my colors way better.

Fat Quarters usually end up being expensive for the yard...so I will try and find the fabric and buy a 3rd or a half.
I could never do much with a FQ (IMO) so I quit using them and just buy yardage.
