Default Question about hand stitching with a hoop?

Yep another one of them Newbie stupid questions . Does it matter if you use a quilting hoop or and embroidery hoop. I see that the quilt hoop is thicker but will the embroidery hoop mess anything up? Does it really make a difference?

I just hope I dont have a limit to stupid questions.

    Thanks again everyone.

no stupid questions, just inquiring minds!! I think an embroidery hoop will work if it will hold the fabric with the correct tension. No reason not to try it. I used to use the cheep wooden hoops but I was breaking them so invested in a heavier one.

No stupid questions here. The embroidery hoop may get the job done, but I suspect you will really enjoy working on a nice quilting hoop if you have a lot of hand quilting to do.

Try to get an older quilting hoop. They're so nice. I found them used on line. The newer ones are flimsy as is an embroidery hoop.

The round one is the one I use the most I got it at Joanns it is wooden but heavy wood and does a nice job. Sometimes I use the oval floor frame but I like the hoop better.

You can probably use an embroidery hoop with a low loft batting but it will be a battle getting the outer ring on going over 2 layers of fabric and batting. The spring loaded ones aren't meant to go over that much thickness and it will be difficult for you to get the tension correct for quilting. Eventually you will stretch out the spring so you will no longer be able to use your hoop for embroidery. I recommend getting a quilt hoop, the kind you tighten the outer ring with a wing nut. The cheap wooden ones sold at Jo-Annes don't last. I agree with Up North try to find an older one at a garage/yard sale or thrift store or on line. I have a plastic no slip one that is made out of some kind of heavy duty plastic composite and really like it. I paid considerably more for it than the el-cheapo wood ones cost but to me it was worth the extra cost. It is durable and works very well and for as many quilts as I have done with this hoop I suspect I would have gone through multiple cheapy wood ones.

There are some very nice wood ones made of hardwood as well.

I use the white PVC rectangle quilting "hoop" to quilt with. It's heftier to hold in my hand and helps me with the weight of a quilt. I have several embroidery hoops of different sizes, depending on the size of the piece I'm working on, and the intricacy of the stitches I'm doing.
