Question only a guy would ask

Piker - I never wash my material before I cut it up and sew into quilt. Others on the board wash everything and dry and fold it before ever taking it into the quilt room. They only starch it just before cutting it for a quilt. By the way, I spray my starch on the back of my material then iron/press on the front. No flakes that way.

No advice about the starch that you haven't received already, but I just have to say: I love guys who quilt! Who sew at all, in fact. My sons are excellent cooks but none of them sew....and I wish they'd discover the joy of creating with fabric, as you have, Tom!
Edited to include Tim (loved your post! I have a Tim), and Bob!

I'm a big fan of starch and I use a heavy hand. By the time I've worked the pieces into blocks they have softened considerably. I also think starch helps stabilize the blocks. When I put the top on the frame to long arm the starch helps keep the quilt straight. This being said I only starch the fabric before cutting.

Welcome to the board. I have learned lots of good stuff on this board. I use Sta-flo starch with 50 percent water in a spray bottle and I also use washable school glue. I wash everything after project is finished.

I love Mary Ellen's best press. (such a cool name! hehehe!) But mostly I use Niagara Sizing. It is called a finishing spray and it does not leave the fabric stiff, just a hint of body. Gosh, I sound like a hair commercial! O I don't often wash the quilt before gifting it because I like the feel of the "new" fabric.

I startch but always wash a quilt before it leaves my house. If anything bleeds, comes apart or anything, I know it first!
I would be so embarrassed if I gifted a quilt and there was something wrong with it.
