Has anyone ever made borders uneven? By that I mean the top and bottom border narrow and the right and left side borders wider? My quilt turned out to be 40 x 72, and I would like to make it wider but not longer. Does that make sense? Thanks for you help in advance.

I have also put on boarders on the sides and not the top and the top and not the sides. Just depends on how the quilt is and if it needs more to get to the size I want. I just make sure after this that there is one boarder that is the same going around the whole thing to finish it off.

Of course!
Sometimes the set of the blocks just doesn't give you the size you need. If the balance is appealing to the eye, it's perfectly "acceptable" to do it this way. It's also acceptable to do it this way 'cause it's your quilt.

I added some pinwheels to my DD's quilt which was way to short for her bed

sure lots of times- usually my (problem) is opposite from yours- often the quilt is wide enough- but needs more length. but either way- i've added a row of blocks to each side which is not on top and bottom- then borders to add width- i've made 8" wide borders on 2 sides and 4" on top/bottom=
what ever works and looks (right) to me.
it is your project- you can make it any way you want.
