Default Rag quilts

Making a baby rag quilt, but need to know when joining the rows, do I open the seams or lay one to the right and the other to the left? I appreciate your help.

I open the seams, although because you're going to clip them I don't think it makes any difference.

I agree it doesn't seem to matter. I clip right to the edge of the overlap. Would a rag quilt be a good idea of a baby? I'm thinking of all those little threads. Maybe I'm being overly cautious. I haven't done many quilts and don't know another about baby quilts.

I also agree. I leave them open. They are all going to get eventually cut.

I've wondered the same thing tkhooper. I think of the threads and the fuzz, especially if the child is on it for tummy time. I don't think I would put my baby on their stomach on a rag quilt.

I think the rag quilts that are animals are cute and would make a great wall hanging but not on the floor for the child to lay on.

babies can lay on the back side of a rag quilt. no fuzzies. otherwise, i'd rethink the rag bit.

I'd wash it really good first but other than that it would be ok. I applique designs on the non ragged side for the baby to play with. You can also make them with fleece and instead of fraying they kind of curl but there are no strings.

thanks everyone. This is a commissioned quilt so I don't really have any say about putting a baby on it or not.
