Rate for custom quilting?

Rate for custom quilting?
Just a curious question for the Longarmers out there! What is the going rate per inch for custom quilting? I had a friend tell me that is having a quilt done by a brand new Longarmer who is charging her 3 cents an inch. For some reason that sounded a bit high to me but I have never had anything done custom. Thanks for the input

I would say that's on the low side. Some detailed pantographs can cost that much. Custom quilting can be extremely expensive, like hundreds for a baby quilt, depending on how much detail is requested.
Rates also vary by geographic location.

There is also a lot of variation in what is meant by custom quilting. I think of it as quilting that is suited to the quilt, i.e. not a pantograph or all-over design, but within that definition it could still be very simple, loose quilting or dense and complex. The fact that the longarmer is new to the business doesn't necessarily mean that she is new to longarming or not proficient at it.

Prices near me run from 1.5 cents per inch for very basic, low-density, computerized pantos to 5 cents an inch for custom, high-density heirloom work.
There are so many variables involved: How dense is the quilting? How much thread will be used? Is the quilting driven by robotics, or by hand? All these factors come into play and each longarmer has different pricing and policies for each.

Wow, one of our gals in the senior group just charges 1cents an inch and I am in Southern CA. It probably is what the customer is willing to pay. I use to quilt on my Bernina back in the 90s and I got $8 an hour.

I agree with this. Google quilting services in your area and compare prices there.
