I bought this panel and made a quilt for my great-nephew who was born on my birthday last year.... https://www.google.com/search?q=Ston...ml%3B500%3B898 I forgot to get a pic of the completed quilt before I sent it to him, but it turned out sooo cute, and I made it larger, so he should be able to get quite a few years of use out of it before he out-grows it!

Here's a picture of a sample I came across. It might help your planning. Show us what you decide!

I love this quilt for a little boy: Quiltmaker pattern collection: Over by the Pond. It has frogs, turtles, bees, lily pads etc. I have the pattern, but it can be purchased here:

I am not sure if there is any fabric that has been produced of just a river. I searched on eBay and this is what I found:

Depending on your skill level, you could make a river flowing using a Bargello pattern and shades of blue fabrics.

Good Luck.

Quiltmaker put out an adorable Pond Pals quilt several years ago. http://www.quiltmaker.com/articles/pondpals
It is pieced and has "poseable" applique animals. It would be very easy for you to adjust to suit your preferences.
