What's your price range? I saw the new Viking (Diamond??)demo'd a few weeks ago. It adjusts pressure and tension according to the thickness of your fabric. It's quite pricey but it has some amazing features.
I use a Brother ULT, no longer made, but it has sewn everything i have asked it too. I find the Brother machines are very user friendly and reliable. My DDs have the less expensive ones from WM but they have had no issues with them at all.

Go to a dealer and see what they have in older, used machines. You'll get a lot more for your money in an old workhorse than you would for a new, cheapy plastic machine. It doesn't matter what machine you get, you'll have to learn to adjust the tension!!

Yup, I agree with Scissor Queen. Look for a nice, vintage machine on CL also...but yes, you need to learn how to adjust your tension if you're going to be sewing with many different types of fabrics.

I love my Singer 401A. I sews through everything! I do have ta adjust the tension but that's not hard at all!!

I have an old Kenmore and it sure is a workhorse! Go metal all the way and you wont be disappointed!

Definitely get a old machine, it'll be well worth the price and you can service it yourself.
