    Default Old Hollywood Style?

Finally getting around to planning out my MiL's quilt for Christmas (late start I know ), according to DH, who asked her what she liked but is terrible at relaying information, she's doing her bedroom "Old Hollywood" style, silvers/blacks/golds and maybe red or royal purple. If I'd been given a decade, I'd have a better idea of what to look for in terms of fabric colors and patterns, but I'm just lost Was thinking about doing this pattern: http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Starf...ock_Page2.html

Any ideas/suggestions/helpful links to get me on my way?

    TIA! <3

Good luck with this one. I googled 'old hollywood style' bedrooms, and not one photo had a patchwork quilt in it. I'd be wary of too much black, as it picks up every bit of fluff and hair around.

Saw this one called 'Aura' from a Board member and thought it looked rather elegant in those softer shades. Only 2 easy blocks, '54-40 or fight' (with white corner blocks) and 'Shoo Fly'- or is it Churn Dash

All I can think of for the moment. Love to see what you come up with.

Maybe a chevron quilt? Or, as bizarre as this sounds, something in the more 'modern' style. It might be more fitting with the 'old hollywood' theme than something more traditional? I'm not into the modern style myself, so no help with particular pattern but perhaps google some of those images for some ideas?

I'm guessing old Hollywood translates to Art Deco. Look up Don Linn and Art Deco quilts. There is lots about Art Deco online. Not sure how much about quilts but Don Linn will give you a place to start.

Here is one that might be suitable. It is called Licorice Fizz - it is a free pattern at http://www.andoverfabrics.com/FreeQuiltPatterns.php. If you set the "show" button to 50 per page, it is on page 6.

I saw a Lover's Knot done in black, grey and gold and it was very elegant. Or perhaps a two colour Bargello--that could be very striking and bring a little colour to her bedroom. And then there is this one from our board. I love it! http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t202637.html I do think you should steer away from tradtional.

I love both of these because they remind me of the double wedding ring ... the name of which is so appropriate for a wedding gift

When I think of "old Hollywood", satin and velvet immediately come to mind - something shimmery and elegant. When you look at images of "old Hollywood" bedrooms there is a lot of satin. Do a very simple geometric pattern using washable satin and washable, low loft velvet (but not velveteen). Possible patterns could be square in a square, just plain square blocks alternating in 2 different colours with occasional embellishment on the satin squares, fan pattern with embroidery.

I made a satin and velvet quilt many years ago for a gift and the results were stunning. It was alternating 8" blocks of pale blue satin and royal blue velvet - quilting design on satin.

I second costumegirl's comment. The first image that comes to mind is a solid-color satin comforter that reads as a medium tone on black-and-white film and photographs beautifully. Although there were no shortage of cowboy movies and other rustic themes with a variety of quilts in old movies, that's not what we usually think of as "Old Hollywood" - it's about the glamour.
