What a great gift idea! I still have mine. I won it at a 4-H competition in 1983!

That's a lovely gift! I discovered earlier this year that my mother had rekindled her passion for sewing but found it difficult to work with my grandfather's machines. He was able to repair them by securing parts but she couldn't do the same. I decided to get her a machine for Christmas and also provided a cornucopia of sewing tools and notions. Her excitement was hard to repress and now she's ready to sew and quilt without delay.

wonderful gift. When my son was about 9, i got him a tackle box full of sewing 'things'. He also talked me into buying a good machine for myself, and letting him have the old one. Smart kid!

No she doesn't have her own sewing machine but I want to give her one of mine but they just don't have room for one. Her Mom is kind of nervous about having one as there are two other kids that she is afraid would get at it. I have her come to my house to sew. They only live 5 miles away so that works for now. A bigger house is in the future for the family so for now it's sewing at Grandmas.

    Good for you!

I'd add give a girl a tool box, too. Or an electronics kit.

I don't have a sewing basket nor do I want one. If it needs to be mended by hand, it isn't.

My Grand Daughter got a sewing machine from Santa when she was 12 years old.now when they have a day off school she comes and sews with me. She has won several ribbons in 4-H with her projects and even sent a couple bed size quilts to State Fair. She loves to sew . I hope she keeps liking it.

A couple years ago I gave my two DILs and my DD sewing kits. None of them are interesting in sewing items from scratch, but everyone needs a few repair items. Here is what they got:

The sewing items were purchased from my LQS.
The pockets radiated out from the center pincushion and tied up with a casing along the outside edge.

Great idea. Have given sewing baskets for 2 of my granddaughters and they both love to come and sew with me.
