I own a Bernina 1530 and was advised by my Bernina dealership to use Mettler silk finished thread. Back then, there was NOT the variety of threads that are available today but I have like how Mettler thread has worked on my Bernina. I like what Tartan has advised you to do since it will be for your husband, you will always have the opportunity to fix any problems.
