I have a Singer 347 purchased a couple of years ago at a garage sale because of the pretty aqua color. I gather from reading here that they aren't held in very high esteem. I never got this one to sew, not that I tried very hard. The needle moves & it seems fine till I put actual fabric under the presser foot! Then nothing. I'm not completely sure I have it threaded correctly even.

So, I am packing up to move. The movers will be here tomorrow. Should I keep this machine & try to get it going or drop it off at Goodwill? Thanks! I value the opinions on this board!

I just found some information on this machine on the internet. Apparently it is a mostly steel machine, but it does have some nylon gears, which makes it vulnerable to wearing out. If the gears wear down, it is more expensive to fix/replace them than the machine is worth. The previous model, 337, had all steel gears, so it would be a better choice.

This is kind of your call. How much do you love it? :-)

I found this threading diagram for the 348; might help you thread the 347 correctly. If the machine is threaded correctly but still does not sew, often it is a problem with the timing which requires a tech to correct. In that case, I would take it to Goodwill rather than lugging it to a new location.

I am a little ruthless when moving--and would not take something with me that I do not use ALOT

Okay! Thank y'all for your input. The only thing I loved about that machine was the color. I think I learned a good lesson about buying without doing some research, even on a cheapie yard sale find. That puppy is on it's way to Goodwill in just a few minutes!

Goodwill gets my vote -- DD had one given to her and spent more on "getting it fixed" than a modest new machine would have cost.
