I'm trying to get little guy's quilt done before my group of friends does their gift exchange on Wednesday. Its a long shot, but I'd like to get it done...

Well, I ran into a problem. I thought I had bought enough yardage for the back...which it turns out I did. The problem is the width is, for some strange reason, 41". So I'm off by about two inches. I'm not quite sure what to do about this. Can't go out and buy more fabric and I really don't want to go make the top shorter so it will fit. Any suggestions?

Do you have some fabric that would go with what you have for backing and make a border on the backing that would wrap around the front for a binding?

I'm thinking if you are lacking 2 inches ( that would be one inch on each side + the 1/4 inch seam...making it 1-1/4 in. to get to the edge on each side), then if you had something to make a 3 inch strip to go all the way around........that would give you 1/4 inch to make up for the seam on the backing...1 inch to get to the edge on the back ( on each side )....that would give you 1-1/2 inches to play with for the hem on the front.

If you having a strip of anything to practice on, just sew it by hand for a short distance and wrap it to the fornt to see if it will work. Wish I could be there to help you, because I may not be clear with my instructions.

It could add some interest to the quilt. Please let me know.

If you don't have a strip that's long enough by itself, you could piece a border if you have any scraps left from the quilt.

I don't think I have any fabric that would work. I mostly have random 1/4 yards and certainly not enough to make a border for this quilt.



...I don't know. Might have to skip the quilt idea for Christmas and get him something else. Besides, his mom bought him a fleece tie blanket kit (Tigger, of course) to make a blanket for him and his godfather's mom is crocheting him a blanket. And he already has like a dozen blankets so it won't be the end of the world if I can't get this quilt done.

If you have enough length to spare in the piece of backing fabric, you can cut the whole piece from top corner to opposite bottom corner on a diagonal. Obviously, accuracy is required! Then you can slide the pieces, one up and one down, until you have the backing width you need. At this point, you sew the cut pieces back together. You will then have two small triangles to cut off, one on top and one on the bottom, to square up your backing. If you are only lacking 2 inches, your triangles to be cut off should be small. Weezie

Can you add a border to the back to make it come out even? If you had some ore fabric that would go with the existing colors that would be one option.
