    Some are "sew-on" and some are "shank". Shanks are best if you are using them with buttonholes. For decoration on wall quilts, for instance, I always use the sew-ons. Shanks tend to droop.

    I have actually found some shaped buttons in the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby and AC Moore, Joannes also but be careful sometimes they do not have the shanks

    You can also go to the Simplicity pattern site, probably the other pattern makers as well, as they would have decorative buttons for their pattern lines.

    Home Sew has a good selection. I bought several from them. Sent for their catalog and ordered on line.
