I have had this happen before with appliques and especially large ones like in you have in your piece. its ADORABLE by the way! the "chill" tab is too cute. It shouldn't be too hard to correct the snow flake. the hat seems fine to me and the snowman would look good in a looser meander w/ white thread. The textures give it more dimension. I don't think the BSR contributed to it at all but next time quilt the appliques first and do the back-ground last working out from the center.

What kind of fusible did you use? Do some quilting on those pieces and they will not puff....

I always outline my applique or sashing first. I would have done a little less density since you were not planing to quilt in the applique.

sued5320, maybe you could try hand stitching (quilting) around the snowflake and you could see quickly if that would make the difference, and then do some outlining on the snowman if you like the way the snowflake looks. It's very cute BTW!

Oh, look, you've made a trapunto wall hanging!! I agree with the others, in order for the item to lay flat, you need to balance the quilting desnity over the entire piece.

    Cute Quilt!

My first thought is that with a metalic thread, you'd want to use a metalic needle. They have a smoother eye in the needle.

Practice on some scraps and adjust the tensions to be a bit looser, top and bottom, until it looks good. If you're machine quilting, you need to be brave about learning how to adjust your tensions. Different threads, batting, fabrics, fusible webs, etc, will change how you need to adjust your tensions. Set your bobbin tension first, make sure it's not too tight. Then adjust the upper tension. Play on a scrap until it looks right.

Did you SITD around the snowman and echo around the snowflake prior to filler design, if not that could also be part of the problem

I am so glad I read this group of messages. I haven't done much in the quilting line other than stitch in the ditch and have wanted to try other ways. Reading this has given me so much information from all of you to use. I will definitely bookmark this particular thread. SUED5320, sometimes we are too hard on ourselves. The wall hanging is so cute - and a great learning experience.

Have you given it a good pressing? Sometimes, for a small wall hanging that's all it needs.

Could the bump in the middle of the snowflake caused by all those seams coming together? If so, I am at a loss for how to change it, but your quilt is so cute that I am thinking that you are over analyzing it? IMHO
