Handi Quilter sells rail clamps too, they have long ones and short ones.

I like to float the top. Makes it a little faster to get started and if I have to take out stitches it sometimes helps to lift the top and get at them between layers. That is if you are taking out stitches at the bottom of what you recently quilted.
