Hello everyone. I would like to try Sharon Schambers quilt basting technique. I wonder if any of you who have tried it had used flannel for your quilt back. I have 3 lap quilts with flannel backs waiting to be quilted. I know she recommends starching your backing really well but can you do that to flannel? Yes, I did make sure to wash the flannel first and it is a good quilter's grade flannel bought in a quilt shop. Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

Yes, you can starch flannel.

I use quiltshop quality flannel alot for the backs of baby and large lap quilts. Last one was 75x75". I never starch my flannel, and I baste with safety pins...lots of safety pins. I have yet to have a problem using the flannel.

The starch will wash out so I don't see why you couldn't but I'd probably do it from the back side.

I don't see why you couldn't starch flannel...it's cotton, just fuzzier. :) I've used that method with flannel backing...but I didn't starch it. For some reason, I never starch my backings, it's never occurred to me to do so! LOL

I did use her technique for my last two quilts and one had a flannel back. The technique works well, but I thought it was better with the regular cotton backing. Starch the mess out of that flannel as well. Good luck with your quilt!!

Just FYI - I won't use flannel as backing again - we just don't play well together - LOL!!

I starch flannel & most other fabrics from the back side without any problems. I don't put a lot of starch on flannel, though because it will really soak it up. Just enough to get it to behave.
