Very easy, pair up a blue and white square right sides together. Draw a pencil line on one diagonal, corner to corner. Sew 1/4" on both sides of the line, then cut on the line. Now you have two large HSQ blocks. Put them right sides together, making sure to rotate one so that a blue corner is on top of a white corner. Draw the diagonal line, sew on both sides of the line and cut on the line. When you open them, you will have two hourglass blocks. Starting with 10" squares should yield blocks about 8 3/4" blocks. You can pair up your fabrics so each hourglass has a matching top and bottom (the classic way) or mix and match your HST squares to make a more scrappy looking hourglass bloc with different tops and bottoms. It makes a really clean, classy looking quilt.

The secret to getting the disappearing hourglass block straight is to square up on the middle seam. It has to be straight, so get thee to the ironing board with starch and "get it straight". Then line up your ruler with that line before you cut.

Sadly I found not to just line the sides. Does not work. My HST's are squared up to 6.5 inches. I used he 45 degree line to square them up. Yet when I sew them all together I get a 12.25 inch block , I think it should be 12.5 inches. How do I cut a 12.25 inch block into 3 equal strips. here just isn't enough fabric to make it 12.5 inches. What am I doing wrong. If I make my seams a tad wider and get 12 inch blocks will that work. Will try one later today.

I don't cut mine exactly into thirds. You can measure from the middle seam and cut at 2 or 2.25 inches, or whatever is easy for you to remember. Those one eighth inch cuts are a bummer and not necessary.
Take pieces of paper and test cut to see where the cuts would be and how they would look with different sizes. You could draw and color the HST to make this easier to see.
The 10 inch fabric pieces will make a block only so big. I guess you would have to be satisfied with the size that comes out.
