I attach my 24 and 36 inch rulers together with the quilt ruler connector and use 8lb. hand weights to hold them down while I cut from the length of fabric.

I'd tear off 7-1/2" wide strips. Fold/press each strip in half at the very center of the motif. Then I'd cut 3.25" wide strips which would unfold to 6.5" strips x 72+ inches in length. I have done this successfully with a border stripe.

that is all fine and dandy if you can find a piece of fabric with the print straight on grain

I would fold twice (down to 18", as someone else suggested). The trick to keeping the cut from being uneven is to check those folds that have a fold inside them. Pinch your folded edge...right at the very tip of the fold..if you can feel a separation between the two or more fold layers...you need to adjust until you can't feel a separation. The separation is what causes the "jog" when cutting folded fabrics.

I don't know why anyone should get the horrors! IMO it is the only way to ensure that you get your pieces of fabric straight with the grain.
