I always made my queen size quilts close to the batting size of 90" wide by 108" length. The pattern and border widths can control somewhat the final size you make. You might go over the measurement with her with someone's queen size bed to show her the dimensions. The last Queen I made for a friend, she wanted the sides to hang over more like a bedspread and I ended up piecing an almost king size quilt. Fortunately, I gave her the top of the quilt done in her favorite fabric and she had it quilted.

I find drafting on point challenging, too, but it gets easier with practice. Here's a list of finished block sizes and their diagonal dimensions - this can help when drafting. I still can't always figure out how many squares I'll need to get the size I want, but once I've started my pattern, I can figure out how much size it takes by counting blocks (if that makes sense).

Great diagram!! I wouldn't know the first thing to drafting a pattern. Your sister will be blessed by your quilting efforts!

Here's my updated draft. I cut back to one yellow strip to help with placement and it should finish at about 77x91 with the blocks being 10in finished if I did my calculations right. She has decided she just wants one that fits her full bed well instead of going for the potentially bigger bed.

I really prefer my quilts to be longer and overhang 3 sides. It makes it warmer up north. It use to drive my mom nuts but she would do it. Now I make them bigger unless someone doesn't like the look. Not easy to quilt but can be done. Good luck I love the pattern.
