No problem - you're off to a really good start! I like drafting my own patterns, too, and I've ended up with stripes in the wrong places before, which is why I look out for them. I like to start from the bed dimensions and figure out the top, then extend it down the sides so that the bed top part looks right.
I find drafting on point challenging, too, but it gets easier with practice. Here's a list of finished block sizes and their diagonal dimensions - this can help when drafting. I still can't always figure out how many squares I'll need to get the size I want, but once I've started my pattern, I can figure out how much size it takes by counting blocks (if that makes sense).
