I try to use something that is relatively 'sticky' - as in, not coming off easily. It does help to minimize potentially awkward situations.

The only 'bad' thing about using nail polish - I don't seem to be able to do a very neat job of applying it to anything.

Always mark everything. I was at a class and right after it was over a lady said she was missing 2 rulers. Only about 3 people had to leave early. Two different ladies told me that this had happened before but only if this one person (that had left early) was in a class. I was so shocked! Guess it show naive I am.They told me something ALWAYS turns up missing when this lady takes a class. They all watch their stuff like a hawk which I don't blame them but it sure took the fun out of the class for me. As a matter of fact I haven't taken a class since now that I think of it.

I mark but it is surprising how rulers go missing. Even our teacher lost a 24 x 6 inch ruler.some are genuine mistakes and you can always tell these thank you everyone for your relies.

I take my rulers in a ruler bag I made. This way I can tell easily if I have all of my rulers when I go to leave. I know I should mark my rulers with my name, but I just don't.

I also find that the majority of quilters are friendly and can be trusted to return . The one person spoils the feel good factor. One of our 70 year olds has identical items to myself and frequently rings to say she has given my brother my ruler or cutter. It is never done deliberately and my brother and his family have a laugh at the things she returns to them.
