I am new at quilting altho I am 71. I am making, trying, to make a Tumbling Block quilt. I have been to many sights on the internet and found some old patterns and they all give me different ways to put the blocks together. If I do like some say, I get the footprint of the quilt in a bunch. I think I should make rows, the long way, up and down, and then sew them together. I would like some help. I think my way is going to be mind bending!! But it will work.
    To any help
    Thanks

MadQuilter is the lady to talk to. She has made gorgeous tumbling block quilts. If she doesn't see this thread, PM her. She is a nice lady and I'm sure would give you all the advice you need.

    Hi Ritacarl

Welcome to the board. When I did my TB quilt I used the set in Y seams. I assembled each individual block first then I sewed each of my rows, leaving the 1/4 seam allowance unsewn so I could still do the set in seam when putting my rows together. Sewing the rows together did take a little longer because I had to set in each Y intersection. It did seem daunting at first but once i got going I got into a rhythm and it really wasn't so bad.

Here is a link to a picture of my Tumbling Blocks

Thanks for the compliment but hahahaha have I got you fooled.

Feline Fanatic - your quilt is stunning. Did you do the inset method with Y-seams?

I made a quilt for my hubby years ago and I sewed the individual blocks by machine. It was a bit of a pain because you have to start 1/4" in from the edge AND stop 1/4" before you get to the other end. I endedup marking all my seams so I could see the dots.

A few weeks ago, I found some leftover blocks and sewed them into a pillow top by hand. That seemed easier - but I would not want to do that on a large quilt. It's in the pictures thread under Pat's Pillow. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Which method interest you most? If it is putting individual blocks together, I can probably give some advice - but I am not at all familiar with the strip piecing.

Gotta run - but I'll check in later.

Hi, This is what I am planning to do. I have cut the foot path or top of the block into 2 pieces, leaving 1/4" for seams. Then I am going to sew it to the medium piece. I will do that in one long row or length of the quilt. Then I will take the second half of the top and sew it to the dark piece all the way to the top. Then I will have one long seam. Of course coming into the blocks are other block pieces. I will have to lay the whole quilt out and take each piece or series of pieces to sew. Matching colors, etc. I sure hope it works. Had a lot of old material that I got from my mothers when she passed away. Some of the pieces are chincy, but I'm practicing now. Thanks, Rita
