You can press velvet or velveteen. You need to use a nap board, and if seams need to be pressed open, then you need to place cardboard strips behind both sides of the seam you are pressing open. If you do a decorative stitch on the top side, you would need to use a roller foot so you don't mar the finish on the fabric or leave a track. I've made many velvet and velveteen garments. I haven't used it in a quilt, however, but the same tips when working with garments should apply to the quilting process as well.

You don't usually do crazy quilts and maybe you don't want to do that at all. I think a large square of crazy quilting with handmade lace and medallions, etc. would look wonderful in a frame for a quilting room. I don't know if your mother or grandmother or a friend does handmade lace or medallions but I'll bet some of us on the QB would send you some if you decide to go that way.
