You can press velvet or velveteen. You need to use a nap board, and if seams need to be pressed open, then you need to place cardboard strips behind both sides of the seam you are pressing open. If you do a decorative stitch on the top side, you would need to use a roller foot so you don't mar the finish on the fabric or leave a track. I've made many velvet and velveteen garments. I haven't used it in a quilt, however, but the same tips when working with garments should apply to the quilting process as well.
