What to do with fraying fabric?

Last year I repaired a small wedding quilt that the bride had washed. About half of the patches disintegrated in the washer. The quilt maker had used raveling fabric and used very narrow seams. What a headache that was!!!! I would use that kind of fabric to stuff dog beds and nothing more.
