OK...so I'm new to this website and need some help. I'm getting ready to do a quilt for a benefit. I'm somewhat of a beginner quilter and need help finding the pattern for this quilt. It looks like Warm Wishes, but not quite. Notice the boot fabric squares are 2 different sizes (rather than all the same size). Can anyone help me here?? THANKS!!!

It is the sashings that are the pieced part of this quilt. You make them with the brown strips on either side, with the corner stones and then sew them to the long set of blocks and pieced applied pink and brown in between little pieces of sashing... YOu see?

Then appy the outside brown and pink borders and you have it!

It's just a variation of what's called commonly refered to as the Warm Wishes pattern.

You can devise your own pattern by determining the basic FINISHED sizes of the components.

From the picture, I would make the following assumptions:

Boot blocks - the small boot squares are half the size of the larger boot blocks.

Sashing strips - the width of the three strips together equals the smaller square, so to make life easy you want a number easily divisible (and measurable) by three.

For example:
FINISHED small square = 6" (cut 6.5")
FINISHED large square = 12" (cut 12.5")
FINISHED strip = 2" (cut 2.5" x width of fabric)
Three strips would be sewn together and then subcut into 12.5" long (UNFINISHED) units.

Layout out the sections and sew together.
That part should be relatively easy - it's pretty straightforward.

I think the sizes you choose should depend on your focus fabric.
If it's a large print (like a Kaffe floral), then the 12" size would be fine.
But if it's a very small print, you might want to take the sizes down a bit.

Here are some other measurements that would work:
FINISHED small square = 4.5" (cut 5")
FINISHED large square = 9" (cut 9.5")
FINISHED strip = 1.5" (cut 2" x width of fabric)
The three strips would be sewn together and then subcut into 9.5" long (UNFINISHED) units.

Here are measurements for a much smaller version:
FINISHED small square = 3" (cut 3.5")
FINISHED large square = 6" (cut 6.5")
FINISHED strip = 1" (cut 1.5" x width of fabric)
The three strips would be sewn together and then subcut into 6.5" long (UNFINISHED) units.

Thank you so very much!! That was a huge help!! Do you have any suggestions on approx how much of each fabric I would need if I were to do a queen sized quilt? Like I said, I'm pretty much a beginner. I've done a few log cabins and some simple baby quilt patterns. But I've always had instructions to keep me on the right track and tell me how much of each I need.

What size blocks do you think you might use?

Give me a minute. I think I did an EQ layout for someone a while back. Let me see if I can find it.

I would probably go with the 12" big blocks, or maybe 9", but no smaller. It will be for a rodeo event so it will be in a cowboy fabric of some sort. Thought about the burgandy and blue handkerchief material and doing the big blocks in one color and small blocks in the other, but just not for sure yet until I get out to look at material. I'm an hour away from the closest fabric stores (except our Wal-Mart which doesn't have much of a selection AT ALL). I may find something I like MUCH better. I'm still tossing all the ideas around.

Here's a picture of the quilt, using the 12" blocks. It measures 96"x114".
You can chop off a row and column (including the sashing) if you want - which would reduce the size to 78"x98".
That might be big enough for an auction - after all, you can't know how or for what people are going to use it.

Sometimes a large throw size will be more used than a ginormous bed sized quilt - it sort of puts the expectation out there that the winners are going to redecorate their bedroom around this quilt.
Although, if it's a bunch of serious rodeo devotees, who knows what their bedrooms already look like? ;-)

EQ (Electric Quilt software) is sometimes funny when calculating yardage, but I did a back of the envelope check and was pretty close.

Fabric requirements for the above quilt layout using 12" large blocks- (don't have a heart attack, but it's a lot of fabric).


FOCUS fabric = 5.5 yards
STRIPS = 1-3/4 yards of each of the three fabrics.

Another option for choosing fabrics is to buy online - you'll get a much better selection that you'd get in any one store (except those LQS's with 5000+ bolts).

Go here: http://www.quiltshops.com/ (over 250 online shops) and search on "cowboys" and "rodeo" and you'll get plenty of results.

Most should list the scale in the description - boots are 3" tall etc. so you can get an idea of how they'd fit in a block.
If you need help finding the coordinating strip fabrics, call the store to see what they have in stock and recommend.
My feeling is if they are charging LQS prices, they can certainly offer LQS help.
