What is a quilt?

Neesie...I like your thinking. Personally, I use fleece on the back of ALL of my 'quilts', and they have nothing between the fleece and the top. They are warm, cuddly, and all of my family loves my 'quilts'...and quilts they are!

Granky I did this with a bunch of I Spy quilts i made for the kids in the extended family - someone on another forum quilts hers directly to fleece with no batting and said it worked great - I was skeptical but had a top I had made to de-stress so I lightly quilted it to some fleece and tossed it over my dad who was lounging in a chair and told her to 'check it out'! turns out he fell asleep and used that quilt every time they came down - I still haven't put binding on it and he's been gone almost 3 yrs. I used all the fabric I had with no plan in place for binding oops! but it IS very cuddly and warm.
my brother and sil are also fans of fleece and use those throws (fleece only with no quilting) muchmore than they use the quilts I've made them.

"The quilt group I belong to thinks the only " real" quilt is hand quilted....( they are also staunch members of the quilt police)."
I agree! Next thing you know, people will claim it's only a quilt, if it's hand-pieced, hand-quilted, and then ONLY if one uses a certain brand of 100% cotton thread and a certain type of batting. Oh, and let's not forget the mandatory LQS-sold fabric. Then, heaven forbid if you sew it on an inexpensive sewing machine, from WalMart!

this article is interesting because it differentiates comforters, duvets, and quilts

i think we may be confusing a "quilt" with a "quilted item" .... many items can be quilted, as seen, clearly, by going to our Pictures forum.

I would be out of that group so fast, Francie...no wait. They'd kick me out. I have all of my quilts machine quilted and they are beautiful. I love seeing family snuggled into them and that's what counts. I have no time for the quilt police. Our guild is filled with lovely people.

Well, if you're going to go that far, why not grow the cotton, gin it, spin it, weave your own cloth, dye it with walnut shells or marigold leaves, iron it with a 5# flat iron, and then trace around your patterns using glasses or plates, and piecing it by hand, etc. You see where this path will lead us! Listen to your own heart and do what you want.
