I made one that was 54x64, backed with flannel for extra warmth and coziness, and made it a quillow so there was a pillow pocket on the back that was also a foot warmer when used as a quilt. I put a handle on it too so it was easy to carry when it was folded up. You're so nice to do such a thoughtful thing for your friend!

The smaller quilts that I make are not necessarily chemo quilts, but I believe a quilt should cover all of you, with room to cuddle in. I like to make sampler quilts and for me they are quite easy because I make them with 15 blocks, three across, five down, 2" sashing and a 4" border. The quilt comes out at 52x80. It doesn't take much more time to make that size as it does to make a 60" quilt. They can be tied unless you have a long arm. It is such a good feeling to make a chemo quilt. You are a good lady! Might I suggest a small pocket on the backside for your friend to put her feet into as they sit. My Chemo lasted for over 3 hours at a time and having a place for my feet in the quilt would be nice. Not a great thing for people who have a balance problem (as they might forget and trip!) but anyway, my opinion.

I make mine throw size or a little longer. To keep them light, I omit batting and back them with fleece. I generally do try to find out the size of the person and base the length on that.
