I tried fleece but my machine is having a very difficult time with it. I wanted a very thin batting so the baby blanket would be like a blanket not a quilt. Any ideas? I think the fleece is woven too tight.

You could try a layer or two of flannel instead. Make sure it is prewashed and dried it will shrink like crazy and you don't want it to do that once it is already in your quilt!

I don't think Warm & Natural is any thicker than fleece and they also have soft and Bright that I use for baby quilts because it will be washed a lot it is polyester not cotton. I've decide to rethink the cotton batting depending who i'm giving the quilt to... if they wash it a lot I'd suggest Soft and Bright.

A layer of flannel that has been washed and dried a couple of times would work well. Quilter's Dream Lite would also be a good choice. Warm n Natural has a stiff drape, so I wouldn't use that.

I prefer cotton battings because they wear very well over time -- provided they are quilted closely enough. Most of the antique quilts we treasure so much have cotton batting. An all-cotton flannel will give you the thinnest batting possible; just be sure to prewash and dry. Flannel can shrink unbelievably; two pre-washings and dryings is not too much.
