What would you do first?

Hi Everyone!
I am sure some one will have an answer to this question. I am making a Yellow Brick Road quilt. It measures 9 blocks in each row, with 11 rows. 99 blocks in all. I am going to hand quilt it all in sections of 3 . Being 9 inch blocks, I want to quilt 1/4 in. on the inside of the 9 inch blocks, plus a line corner to corner. What would you quilt first. The X or the 1/4 inch around. I know the rule is start in the center. Does all the above make sense??

Barb, I had to think about this one for a minute!!! Since you are hand quilting, I would probably do around the block first than the x thru the middle. And if you are doing in sections of 3, be sure to start in the middle of those sections. I hope that makes sense.
I think it would work just fine doing it either way, but this is the way I would probably do it.

i'm with Tricia. probably doesn't matter. will depend on how tightly you pull the thread through when you're stitching. if you pull it too tight when you go around the block, you could create a slight bubble in the middle.
don't ask how i know that. i just heard it somewhere. i would NEVER make a "mistake" like that. well ... almost never. LOL
try one block each way and decide which works best for you.

That is not a mistake. That is the well known Puckered Look. Alot of us like that. Else why would we do it?

Yea, Debbie, after thinking about this since last night when I posted, I think I would do something more than an x too because the blocks are big. I like that design you posted. Its still simple, but adds just a touch more. Just my thought.

:) Thanks everyone. Debbie, I like your idea with the seed design in the middle. I just printer off the picture. It will sure do the trick. In answer why I am doing it in sections, is, I either dit at the table or my chair and hand quilt. Also take it along to out little group, and can't handle a large project.
Again, thanks everyone for your help.
