Vera, I put a ruler with markings under the presser foot up against the foot flange and note the needle setting to get me to just shy of 1/4". If you do this you can be consistent (enough) to go between machines.

After reading this thread I realize hey, I am not alone!! I have the very same problems as many of you.....do i really expect things to go perfectly every time I sit down to sew? not by a long shot! I just go with the flow and do the best I can. I am not above ripping seams to get those seams "nestled" as Eleanor Burns says....just keep working at learning and improving. My main dilemma right now is as another one wrote, finding patterns to go with all the fabrics I've collected the last 16 years! Another dilemma, indecision. Good luck to all at overcoming these various dilemmas and moving on!!
