I was surprised to read that some famous quilters do not press until the block is finished (or sometimes the entire quilt!).

Edit: I saw a jelly roll quilt done by a quilt guild member who mentioned that she did not press until the entire top was finished. The quilt was gorgeous!

Jinny Beyer doesn't press until the quilt top is done, and then she presses from the top and doesn't care which way the seams go; she says it doesn't matter in the finished quilt. But then she hand pieces all of her quilts, so her piecing is very accurate to begin with, and she also hand quilts.

I always iron all seams. When I'm quilting i make a whole row or square and then press. It goes back to my high school sewing teacher who wouldn't let us get away without pressing a seam. I do like how much neater seams look when pressed though.

[QUOTE=Barb in Louisiana;6898617] I just turn in my chair and do the pressing.

I did this once, thought it was a genius thing to do. After about 2 hours of NEVER getting up out of the chair, though, I couldn't stand up straight and my rear end was killing me! Now I leave the ironing board where it belongs and get up and down as needed, and now sewing isn't nearly the pain in the butt that it was that night!

She's a save the planet nut. She thinks I should stand in a big pan to shower so the water can be saved and used for cleaning water. I don't know why she lives in this neighborhood.

Oh you think that's bad...in college we ended up with a housemate that refused to use TOILET PAPER. She used cloths that she kept in a bucket next to the toilet. We booted her out as soon as the semester was over.

I was raised by hippies and I can stand a lot of "granola crunching" but the perpetual bucket of poop rags was just too much for all of us!

Although on the shower water front...the drought here is so bad I really do feel sad letting all that water just go down the drain. I wish I could capture it and use it to at least water my poor landscaping. It's so dusty and droopy and depressing out there...used to be a cute little yard.
