Default Whitening heirloom fabrics

Does anyone remember the name of the fairly new product advertised as safe for washing/whitening antique quilts, linens, etc.?

I believe it is called Restoration. I got some from a friend who used to own a quilt store. She loves it, I have not used it yet. Martha Pullen has a solution that she uses on heirloom items too. You might be able to find that on her site, Sew Beautiful.

If you can, dampen a piece with a spray bottle of water, lay it in the green grass, and you will be surprised at what
the chlorine of the grass does to a piece. It took all the brownish spots out but not the rust spots, but it did lighten them. I have tried the Restoration and I did not like it. I would try the water on one piece, let it lay for a few hours, and watch it so the dogs do not get on it. haha After one piece, you can decide what to do with the rest. Water is much cheaper then a bottle of Restoration for $13.98.

Thanks, fairydawn, that's it!

ragamuffin, thanks, but the information is for my 85-year-old sister who is recovering from radiation treatments. I'm trying to find the simplest way for her to accomplish something she wants to do by herself.

Prism99, Thank you. If I can't find Restoration I'll try that link.

Do they still make bluing? It was added to the laundry years ago for whites. Think I have seen it in the supermarket.

Not new, but the one I swear by is any "All-fabric" bleach with sodium perborate. Works great for getting old things white, you may need to soak for a few days.

This is definitely information that I want to keep handy. I have a few old pieces that could use whitening. Thanks to all who listed products/ideas. And thanks Daffy Daphne for asking the question.

I seem to remember something about cream of tartar soak that was safe for old linens. I personally use the Zout. It takes out really old stains and I have never had any fall apart on me yet.
