I completely agree....what's the point? I've seen more beginner sewers get confused and frustrated over this!

I agree 100%. It is ridiculous, any way you look at it. I use my 1/4" foot consistently and if my blocks are smaller than what is called for.....Oh, well!

i like Alex Anderson's comment, ",just use the 1/4" seam allowance on your machines foot and make all the seams with the same allowance, they will be true to each other, but use high quality thread which is finer than regular sewing thread to get a truer 1/4" seam." she is correct, great thread like King Tut (Superior Threads) does make a seam that is more a true 1/4 inch using the "quilt" 1/4" foot on my Pfaff.

Ditto on the dislike of scant 1/4 " , need that added in cutting the pattern...
Freedom is costly and quilting keeps us busy...

I never use a scant 1/4 inch seam. But all of my quilts so far has not mattered. I just try my best to be constant on my seams.

When I started that block I thought, "this is a pretty block I have never seen it before." When I finally finished it - it was too small. I had to make it again. I decided that making a quilt with just this block was now out of the question!!!

I don't like the scant 1/4 either because I am not sure if my scant is the same scant :-) every time. (my needle doesn't move as far as I am aware of).

    the point is!

I get what some of you are saying. The point is "Why can't the patterns be made to use a 1/4" seam?" There are so many of us that can't move the needle. Why not allow for the loss of fabric in the seams and make it simple for all of us. I know I've struggled with this to the point of giving up on a log cabin that starts with 1' wide strips.

I so agree! It seems to me, that this "scant" thing just started in the last 5 years or so. Just go look in one of your old quilt books/patterns, and they specify 1/4" seam.....
    To QUILT is human.
    To FINISH is divine.

Sorry, but this hasn't been "in the last 5 years or so"...it has always been a "scant 1/4" seam...due to hand stitching and the pressing of the cloth.
Perhaps some more knowledgable quilters can chime in about the scant "1/4" seam...
