Batik Block Swap 12.5 - Signups thru 5-31-13 - Due 7-31-13

Batik Block Swap 12.5!

The blocks from the last batik block were inspiring so now it's time to make them in 12.5".

Block rules:

Blocks are to be made in sets of 6, one of which will be returned to you. No duplicate sets without prior permission, and each set of 6 must be of the same design, but the fabrics may vary.

You may make up to 6 sets of 6 blocks each for a total of 36 blocks.

Block sizes should be 12.5 inches, so if you make 36 blocks, your top would be at least 72x72.

All skill levels are invited to participate. Be sure to use quality 100% cotton fabrics & appropriate threads that will withstand repeated washings, and your fabrics MUST be pre-washed. ** If you’re using jellyrolls that won’t be pre-washed, please make a note of that on your block labels.

All block styles are encouraged and should be either traditional pieced or paper pieced.

Please do your best work and make something that you would want to have, because you WILL be getting back a block of your own, so use colors and themes that you are proud to send in and will be happy to get back.

Make sure all blocks are labeled with your user name and real name if you wish, and that they have no holes or tears or have too small of seam allowances that would make them unfit to swap, and that they are the size they are supposed to be, in other words, 12 1/2 inches means 12 1/2 inches, not 12 3/8 inches, etc.

Signups will be opened until May 31, 2013, blocks need to be completed and to me by July 31, 2013. Blocks received after that date (without approval) will be returned to you unswapped. I will swap them out and get them back in the mail to you by the following week.

PM me to sign up:

Board Name
Real Name
Mailing address
Phone (in case of problems)
Number of sets

Mailing and postage:

Please put your blocks in a gallon size ziploc bag for shipping and put your name and address on the bag. This will protect your hard work in case the mailman leaves a package outside and will get your items back to you in the event of a mailer malfunction.
Please also include a self-addressed label along with a $6 money order or well concealed cash to cover return postage to you (I use the $5.95 padded priority mailers). These will be sent priority mail with delivery confirmation. If proper postage is not sent, your package will wait until it is received.

In addition to the above, please follow all the basic rules, found here. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

BASICS

- Up to 6 sets of 6 blocks
- Each SET of 6 must be of the same block design
- Each SET must be of different design than other sets
- Include enough postage
- Mail BY 7/26, after 7/26 use Express mail.

Questions? Suggestions? Problems?

PM me any time

Elisabrat 04-11-2013 06:29 PM

I will try it! what the heck, time for something new and fun and colorful to boot!

DustysMomma 04-11-2013 08:55 PM

Hmm, to be honest, I'm worried I'm not ready for people to see my ugly backsides yet, lol. I'll have to think about this one, but it sounds fun!

verna2197 04-12-2013 09:38 AM

this really sounds interesting but I am not sure either. Do we have to do 36 blocks or just 1 set of 6. Not really clear about that. Do we pick our own pattern?

tracibug 04-12-2013 10:54 AM

Hi Verna-

You can do as many sets as you'd like, up to 6 and you pick your own pattern for each set.

verna2197 04-12-2013 11:23 AM

ok I am going to try it. Hopefully I will like this swap. Just hope I don't mess it up. GGG! So is there a special place I go to sign up at?

tracibug 04-12-2013 02:12 PM

We did one a few months ago in 10.5" blocks, you can find pics on that thread to see what you're up against.

Send me a PM with your name, address, etc. as listed in the thread rules, please.

Oh no, you daring me now? LOL, you've seen my sewing girl!

Hmm, well it is an opportunity to try out my new Accuquilt cutter. Let me think on it while I knock out a couple other projects & see where I am scedule-wise so I can decide how many sets to do, but I'm in.

tracibug 04-13-2013 09:27 AM

Your seeing is fine... Especially when it was your first throw, sheesh don't be so hard on yourself! You should've seen my first runner :-)

I will consider the challenge accepted and look forward to seeing what you come up with. Btw strip blocks are gorgeous in batiks... Since you got that cutter and all.

sewmany 04-13-2013 04:21 PM

I'm new to swapping in QB. But interested in this one.
let me see if i understand correctly.
they are to be 12.5" blocks.
one set means sending in 6 blocks each in their own bag.
But one can do up to 6 set that would mean sending in 36 baggies of a block in each bag. And just one design pattern to be made for all blocks.
is that correct?

Elisabrat 04-13-2013 04:58 PM

nope every six are the same so if you do 36 your doing six sets off one pattern each set. you can use different fabrics but say need 6 ohio stars, 6 strip sets, 6 nine patches, 6 monkey wrench etc. whatever pattern you chose jut 6 blocks of one design for EACH SET. so dont repeat your design in another set. does that clarify things for you?

Ty elisa,
i now understand that part.
another question. Do each block go on a baggies or just that set pattern of 6 go in a baggie?

mom-6 04-14-2013 01:10 AM

Last time I sent each set of six in a zip bag.

mom-6 04-14-2013 01:14 AM

Oh, and I certainly want to do this one too! Will see how my time works out as to the # of sets.

Elisabrat 04-14-2013 01:41 AM

each set of six goes in a baggie. so they are seperated and easy for the host to sort :) I believe

createfourpaws 04-14-2013 07:40 AM

I am in.......looks and sounds like lots of fun. I love batiks and can't wait to see what is coming. Now I have a use for the batiks I just rec'd in the FQ swap. Yeah.

DustysMomma 04-14-2013 07:44 AM

Dang it, I missed the FQ swap. Must check the main swap board more often!

jaba 04-14-2013 04:54 PM

Sending you a PM traci, I'm in for 6 sets. Got them cut out today, now to get them sewed.

Elisabrat 04-14-2013 05:18 PM

cut you have six sets CUT already? groan.. nope not me. I have the fabric does that count at all? I wanted to finish my table runners for a side tropical swap a few of us are doing.. oh dear big time. I have ideas .. anything that worked superbly last time that everyone loved? what were the favorites? I know I am not doing paper pieced oh heck no. I am doing blocks, my favorites being a greek cross, ohio star, wrench, antique tile and such so not wild in any ways .....

jaba 04-14-2013 05:35 PM

Do your favorite blocks brat, they're perfect. Cleaning the basement today and got sick of cleaning, so cutting began. Each set in a ziplock and they're ready for travel. Got to have something to do you know.

squires1042 04-14-2013 07:02 PM

Sent you a pm for 6 sets

DustysMomma 04-14-2013 08:05 PM

So are they supposed to be 100% batik or batik in them? I'm guessing 100%, but just making sure!

Elisabrat 04-15-2013 07:22 AM

100 percent batik no other types of fabrics. not marbled or something that looks batik-y just batiks. I have some yardage that I can use to making 6 blocks is easy with those. I am going for my favorite blocks. I like making them I can make sure easily they will be 12.5 which is nice.. sometimes I get quarter square triangles and then things can go off by 1/8th an inch in the top or bottom corners. frustrates the heck out of me so I will stick with tried and true. signed up for only 3 but if time allows I will sign up for more. I just wanted to be safe at first. these table runners go out the door and its block time :)

Well that answers my question about is it just batiks in the blocks. I am excited about this swap. I am signed up for 6 sets. Can't wait to see what everyone else is doing. With the batik fq swap I have 10 beautiful FQ's to use. I will need to go get some lighter to use as a complement. There is a store here that carries only batiks, so I am exicted to get over to the shop, I saw them at the Dallas Quilt show and fell in love with what I saw there.

Happy quilting.

DustysMomma 04-15-2013 08:13 PM

I found them! I read createforpaws post & just HAD to find the store! Oh, and look Elisabrat, batik chickens!

Yes that is the one I am looking forward to going to very soon.

Elisabrat 04-16-2013 04:55 AM

oh my gosh that is the greatest site ever.. I only need this one and that one.. post that link in the fat quarter swap for april it was a batik swap and all are lovers of batiks.. give everyone else something to drool over this. I tend to love the batiks that look like water or moss then the ones that have leaves on them.. seems right.. folliage on the ground blends so well.. that is what the batiks remind me of :) I am finding some of the other colors bring a smile to my face often too.

off to run out the door best go get socks! its COLD 22 right now. brrrr...

tracibug 04-16-2013 09:37 AM

Holy buckets, batik chickens!! I NEED THOSE!!!!

I am so looking forward to this swap. I love seeing what other people do. Once I go over to the Fabric Fanatics I will share all about it. I hope to be going real soon. It is hard during the week as i work 10 hours days, dont get off work until 8 pm CST. So I will be planning it when I have one of my days off here in the near future. I am going to ask my son to get me a gift certificate from there for my birthday and mothers day. Will see what happens there.

jaba 04-16-2013 12:31 PM

tracibug asked me if I would post a picture of the quilt I made from the last batik swap. Sorry it's not quilted yet to show you, I've had a pinched nerve in my back so pinning a quilt on the long-arm table was not an option. Looking at the pic I'm sure you will get an idea of what you can do with the blocks when they come back to you.

tracibug 04-16-2013 02:49 PM

Love how they all came together!!

verna2197 04-16-2013 03:23 PM

I thought I had read somewhere a special way to wash Batiks. Can anyone tell me how? Right now I have them in my Laundry Sink in cold water.

tracibug 04-17-2013 08:36 AM

I wash mine in cold water in my washing machine.

tracibug 04-17-2013 08:37 AM

And with a color catcher, just in case...

verna2197 04-17-2013 08:57 AM

I washed them last night in the washing machine in cold water on delicate, I used Woolite and Downy. They still look as pretty as they did when I bought them. I did run them thru a cold rinse before I washed them though. Thanks for you answers.

Annemixon 04-18-2013 04:37 AM

Sign me up too!

verna2197 04-18-2013 07:00 AM

Made my first block came out so pretty, then I measured it and am so so frustrated, it came out at 12 1/4 instead of 12 1/2. Am going to go back and measure all the seams to see what I did wrong. I am doing the Hunter Star and followed the directions exactly. So frustrating.
