Are you up to helping create another group quilt for a good cause?

I call it "Hands of Hope for Kennedy."

Teresa (tslowery) had initially introduced us to Kennedy Joiner, the little girl who was borne with Bladder Exstrophy, and who desperately needs to raise money for an operation. You can read about Kennedy at www.kennedyjoiner.com

I sent some sample square pictures to Kennedy's Mom, Ginger. She likes the red one best. It seems more formal. Since I have never successfully posted a picture, I'll add a post with the specs.

Applique of Hand with Heart

There are three components to the square:

The hand (I traced my own and smoothed out the bumps a little :D)
The heart (inside the palm)
The word "Hope"

Square size: 9" finished (If you want to send yours oversized, I'd be glad to trim it down)

Background color: cream, off-white, either muslin or tone on tone.
Patter color: Kennedy likes all colors but is partial to greens and pinks.

Applique method: whatever works best for you. My samples are iron-on with outline blanket stitch on the red. Standard applique on the blue, with a reverse applique heart. Needle-turn applique on the pink.

Since the red sample is the preferred style, a straight set for the hand placement is preferable to the angled placement. (But I won't curtail anyone's creativity if you want to angle yours.)

Position of the word "Hope" is up to you. I like it best on the hand, but close to the hand or even separate from the hand works.

Gosh I hope that you will be up to helping me help this sweet girl.

Martina, I would be glad to help, but don't applique. Don't know how many do on here, hope you get what you need.

When do you need them by?!? I have only done applique once. I would be willing to try it again though for such a cause! Just let me know when you need it by please!

I'm in!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't set a deadline (yet) since I wanted to see what kind of response I would get.

For those of you who do iron-on applique, that's how the red hand is made. If you don't embroider, I can do that.

I'm going to suggest to Ginger that I want her and Kennedy to send me drawings of what they want their blocks to look like and I'll translate those into fabric.

For those of you who don't applique, and still want to help, I can offer a trip back to Kindergarten. I can do a square for you if you let me know what color and what kind of HOPE you want. Send me a drawing, and I'll make it. That would be fun, and I do have quite the selection of fabric.

This project is in the beginning stages and I consider it a work in progress. No matter what - it will be pretty.

are you going to have all left hands, or both?

gaigai 05-24-2009 08:34 PM

Martina,

I'm definitely in. But can't do anything till this next weekend, I'm working 4 12's in a row. And I'm getting too old to recover from those as fast as I once did! LOL. Let us know where to send.

All those pesky little details - lol

It can be a left hand, a right hand, or both hands, although 9" might be a little tight for an adult hand duo.

I also had some more inquiries about deadline. My plan is to start hitting it hard after I get back from vacation July 6th.

Another question was postet about signing the block. I'd prefer to do a label (or have someone machine-embroider a label) for the project., so signing the block is not necessary.
