Actually most bookcases are between 12 - 15 inches deep. I found some at Ikea - Kilby bookcase which is 9-1/2" deep, 26-3/8" wide and 76-3/8" tall and they are $24.99. I love them, they were also less expensive than any others I could find. They only come in a birch color but they look nice.

I made a wall unit out of upper kitchen cabinets that I got at Ikea. Upper cabinets are fairly shallow. I set the bottom that was at floor level on a strip of 1x2 so the door had clearance. The cabinets at Ikea come in all different widths and heights so you can get a configuration that fits your area. I've gotten a lot of compliments on mine and it wasn't that difficult to assemble the cabinets. Very reasonably priced as well for good sturdy storage.

Check on Pinterest. I just saw bifold doors backed with shelving. It looked like the Pinner had a hidden closet. A peg board can hold shelves as well as hooks. Also consider putting brackets on the ceiling to hold tubs. I had a shelf/high table suspended over 9 tubs in a previous space. I put a skirt on it and could still use it for storage.

If you store your fabric on 'comic boards' they would be just right for your shelves.
