Frustrated

Hi Everyone: Have posted on the other sites to this board but never here. After more than two days of very hard work, I finally have some organization. I inventoried, refolded and rearranged my entire stash. Bought new storage bins and actually know what I now have. Did I gain any additional room from all this - not hardly. Still feel good about a job well done. However, went back into the sewing room today to start a project using a honey bun roll I had. Must be I put it in one dandy place because I can't find it anywhere. After an hour or so of searching I just walked away. This will drive me crazy until I find it.

lfstamper 09-26-2012 02:27 PM

Totally understand. I always say I don't have a filing problem, I have a retrieval problem. You will find it and it will get easier next time.

You probably know exactly where it was before you organized. ;)

Oh my goodness! I could have written the story about trying to find a specific fabric or jelly roll. My fabrics have been "organized" withing the last four months and I felt really proud of myself. Fortunately, I did not break my arm patting myself on the back as I later realized I was "missing" a few pieces purchased for specific projects. Last week, yes it too that long, I came across a laundry basket of misc. kits and yardage I had stored in the back of the linen closet. What can I say? I had decluttered the linen closet prior to working with the fabric...... Last week I thought it was time to review the contents of that closet and make some donations.......

Hopefully, you will discover the honeybun tomorrow. :-)

My kids never understand why I do not want o clean up things! This is just the reason! I know where they are not but if I put them away I will not remember!! Hope you find it soon!

fleurdelisquilts.com 09-26-2012 04:33 PM

This is too funny. I am the world's worst when it comes to retrieving. Leave the chaos where it is and play! I'm kidding: I really have cleaned and organized, but the ONLY reason I can find stuff is because I labeled all the baskets and boxes before I put stuff in. Here's hoping you find it soon. Good luck!

Country1 09-27-2012 01:08 AM

Been there done that! We've all misplaced something at one time or the other. You have it organized, just give yourself a little time to get used to your new system. If you change your mine and want to change your system, that's okay to. (Think we've all probably done that at least once.)
Don't beat yourself up, we all probably walked in the same shoes at one time or another.
Hang in there!...

Kris P 09-27-2012 04:15 AM

I totally relate! If you're like me, you'll find it in the kitchen (where you set it down to answer the phone) or on the desk in you child's room (from when you were called away to help with a homework question.) It will show up, just not where you think it should be. For your sanity, I hope it shows up soon.

just janet 09-27-2012 05:32 AM

Been there, done that! At the moment I'm looking for a yo-yo maker and twister tool that I purchased at a recent Quilt Show. As a final note, my daughter always refers to my sewing room as organized chaos.

Jingle 09-27-2012 05:51 AM

I always remember where something was, can't always remember where I moved them to. Lost my buttons found them and finally found them again. No I finally remember where they are. I put them in a seldom used cabinet in my sewing room. Some things I still haven't found, smaller things.

MrsM 09-27-2012 06:18 AM

I have the same problem. I am thinking of putting lists of contents on all my storage units. I surprise myself all the time with "new" finds of things I have bought but forgotten about. :o)

QuiltnLady1 09-27-2012 06:37 AM

I have the same problem -- you should see what my clean sewing room looks like because I am trying to find a piece of fabric that I put somewhere that I could easily find it. Of course, that is the only thing I want to work on right now -- sigh.

MimiBug123 09-27-2012 07:41 AM

I am currently looking for: 1 patriotic jelly roll, 1 Lil Twister Ruler, 1 throat plate for my grandmother's vintage Singer, 1 bag of fat quarters bought specifically for my DGD little ponies quilt and a piece of fabric bought to applique sock monkies. If anybody finds any of my things, please let me know! That's what I get for cleaning up and organizing my stuff and stash so I could find it!!!!! I'm sure all of the above will turn up when I stop looking. LOL

sewmo 09-27-2012 08:27 AM

I can so relate! So frustrating...and the time wasted searching really annoys me! Oh well, we're not alone.

icon17 09-27-2012 08:39 AM

Lol I've done that TO! Just know I've got that one darn Color or Print Just saw It! But Where oh Where Is It NOW! It was Blue should be in the Blues ? Darn it!

MaryAnnMc 09-28-2012 04:10 AM

Um, yeah, I can relate. I do such a good job cleaning up I can't find anything. Just pile it on the cutting table where I can find it, OK?

SouthPStitches 09-28-2012 11:11 AM

Just checking back in to report I found the flippin' honey bun roll. Now I've lost my momentum. The sewing room looks so neat I hate to mess it up. I should just jump right back in there and plan for another total clean out real soon - how does five years sound?! Organized chaos seems to work better for me.

DebbE 09-28-2012 03:18 PM

My problem is that happens at home, at work, in the car.....I hate when that happens. You'll probably wake up in the middle of the night and know just where you put it.

Lyncat 09-28-2012 04:28 PM

I put my favorite purse patterns in a new place and can't find them for the life of me!

DeniseP 09-28-2012 04:39 PM

I know that feeling. I can't tell you how many things I have gone out and bought new fabric, rulers, patterns and other things because I have lost them in the rubble of my sewing room. I have a hard time with being neat. I admit it. I am a slob. I have been trying to clean my sewing room since the middle of August and it's still a mess.

bgullett 10-03-2012 04:23 PM

I think every one of us who have read this can relate. I usually find things when I rearrange or am not looking for them anymore.

QuiltnNan 10-05-2012 03:29 AM

that's why i hesitate to move things... i can never remember where i moved them to LOL

peacefulquilting 03-05-2013 09:19 PM

Here's my reason for having to reorganize my sewing room: In the past ten years, I know I've bought at least two (if not three) copies of the Yellow Brick Road pattern and I STILL can't find either one of them!!!!

Teddybear Lady 03-05-2013 09:46 PM

Every time I straighten my sewing room, I find things I forgot I had. It's exciting to find material, markers, patterns, etc. I hope you can find what you are looking for. It can be frustrating knowing it's "hiding" somewhere "safe". haha

DonnaC 03-06-2013 07:32 PM

Oh yes, we can all relate for sure. I recently picked up the second issue of the new Quilting Quickly magazine, then I wanted to look back at the patterns in the first issue. Could I find that issue? Why, nooooo, I could not! I finally found it downstairs in my living room, stuck in between some newspaper flyers, not upstairs in the sewing room where it belongs. How did it get down there? I have no clue! :)

QuiltFaerie 03-07-2013 07:55 AM

The Honey Bun Fairies have it and are currently playing with it. When they are done, they will put it back where you can find it. I blame everything I cannot find on fairies. There are the Scissor Fairies, the Seam Ripper Fairies, the Car Key Fairies. Those fairies can be darn annoying some days.

It is time we start making maps! I'm serious. We have an Asian medicine cabinet (was for herbal medicines that the old ways used... and some still do so today). It is perfect for keeping paper clips, small clamps, rubber bands, color pens, tapes, business cards, etc. DH made a map of the chest and put it in the top center drawer. He's so brilliant! I'm thinking that I need to do that for my sewing room. After each quilt I could check the map and not end up putting too many things in the wrong place. Most things go in the right place, but when you need that one specific thing, and can't find it......!!! Yes, I'm going to do this as soon as I get clearence from the doc to start walking more (Achilles problem operated on). See, even bum deals can result in good things happening.

Emma S 03-07-2013 08:18 AM

How many times can you lose a book with quilting patterns in it? Well last count three times. All of my quilting books are in a single book case, so where could I have put the missing book? I know if I bought a replacement it would show up. I think this book is magic.

Skratchie 03-07-2013 10:15 AM

I lose things with such alarming regularity, my husband threatened to put a lo-jack theft deterrent device on me, or at least a panic button car alarm, for fear I would forget where I put myself! He nearly got smacked for that one, LOL, but he does have a point. How disorganized can one woman BE?? No matter how hard I try to get myself organized, it just seems to get worse ...

QuiltFaerie 03-08-2013 06:50 AM

The biggest problem is that I am a very unorganized and messy person. I get so disgusted with myself. I try to be more organized but I swear it just never works. I organize and the next thing you know, everything is a disaster again. I about made myself nuts yesterday looking for my 3.5 inch square creative grid. I am giving up and buying a new one today. I bet as soon as I do, I find the "missing" one. Aaaaarrrrrggghhhhh

If I really want to scare myself, I watch a few episodes of Hoarders, Buried Alive. Now mind you, I am truly not even close to that but it usually works as a good smack in the face to get my mess under control.

I so feel your pain. I always feel so organized until I am looking for the certain something-hope u find what you are looking for.

valleyquiltermo 03-08-2013 07:02 AM

Been moving into my new house with my quilting shop being moved in also. Can't find a thing when I need it. Still unpacking so maybe it will all show up sooner or later. LOL

CherryPie 03-08-2013 02:20 PM

I'm glad you found your honey bun roll. You're not alone in putting things where you're sure to find it....NOT!!! Drives me crazy. I don't know how many times I gave up on finding something, went and bought a new one and as soon as I get home with it...find the original one. And I probably looked in that place a half dozen times. I think someone moved it and then put it back just to see how batty I could get. lol

beckyj 12-04-2016 08:57 PM

I say this all the time, but few people get it.....thought I was alone in the world....good to meet you!

tessagin 12-05-2016 05:38 AM

I was looking for some items the other day. Looked at my cutting table and there was a pack of index cards I don't remember purchasing much less placing on the table. Grabbed a pen and started making a list of what was in the box I was going through. All my containers are see-through but I started labeling and taping to inside of box. I used a sharpie med point so I could read from a slight distance at-a-glance. I had been looking for a template and found it in the 3rd box. pulled the template out and labeled the items in that container. It actually went pretty quick. I found more index cards and marked a few more containers. Anytime I need to pull an item and switch to another container, I can scratch through that item and mark the other container list of the transfer. I went through my yarn carrier and made a list of what's in there. Punched a hole in it and ran a ribbon through the hole and attached it to the zipper pull on the outside pocket. It's working and that's all that matters.

Geri B 12-05-2016 05:53 AM

Tessagin - great tip...quick, easy, inexpensive, versatile! I use painters tape on non see thru containers..no residue, change when need to, and love the new colors!

Pudge 12-05-2016 10:28 AM

I did an inventory of all sewing room gadgets/tools and put everything in an Excel spreadsheet which includes a column marked Location. When I want to find something that is stored in a big 6 drawer dresser, I refer to the spreadsheet. I tacked the spreadsheet to my bulletin board. If I lose the board, I'm doomed like the rest of you.....

Watson 12-05-2016 10:32 AM

My sewing room isn't that big. You wouldn't think I could lose anything in it, but I do! The latest thing was two pieces of blue fabric that I needed for my collage. I tore that place apart. Do you think I could find them?
Finally gave up and got down on my knees to pick up some bits of junk off the floor and there they were...they had fallen behind my cutting table and were stuck halfway up between the table and the wall! I may have cursed a little.

In my working days, we built on and my office moved to a different location. After the move, I wish I had a dime for every time I said "if I was in my old office, I would know exactly where it is"
