Help Needed: Advise for storage and organization.
 

My DD has gotten her "big girl job" and moved 9 hours away. Sad that she is so far away but happy that I can use her room as my sewing/quilting area. It is a blank slate pretty much. Need any advice possible on what to do with it. It is small and unfortunately the bed must stay. My parents always told me I would always have a place to stay and I am doing the same for my daughter. The younger daughter hopefully will be going to college in another year or so and I will move across the hall and occupy her room but until then, this is the room I have. My husband is working on building a cabinet for my sewing machine and serger so that will help but I am afraid that it is going to be so big that it will overpower the room. I do have room that I can move the bed on the wall where the machines are move the machines to the opposite wall, but not sure if that will solve anything.

Sorry, I always come up with crazy ideas, but: When my boys were little, I made bunkbeds out of 6"x1"(?) redwood. The bottom was not attached, therefore the top was like a loft. The rail that held the mattress in the bottom part of the loft section was attached to the wall on the wall side. It had plywood to hold the mattress in. Kind of hard to describe, but the point I am trying to make is that the mattress was up off the floor, so there was space underneath for a bed or a desk, or whatever. Wish I had that "loft" now, as it would be a good place for storage, fabric, etc. You might google bunk beds and get an idea as to what I am trying to explain.

Have your hubby build a table that folds down over the bed -- you can use it for cutting, ironing, etc. When you need the bed the table can fold up and hook to the wall (so it doesn't fall down accidentally) You could even wallpaper the side that will show when it is folded up.

Take it from me, the bed will soon be full. The saying around here is I need 2 weeks notice for anyone who wants to stay overnight. It will take that long to find the bed. I like the idea of making a cutting table that could fit over the bed. Just be sure it is high enough so you don't get a backache. Shelving that will hold clear plastic boxes for notions would be good. Pegboard to hang all your rulers, cutters etc.

What about getting a roll away bed?

If your hubby is handy maybe you should consider a murphy bed. They do sell the hardware kits for those who wish to make their own. They are expensive to buy premade, but not bad if you can do it yourselves..

I like this idea. I have pictures I have collected of such a bed that I was going to make for my kids in their tiny rooms. I will have to remember this when I move!

I'd move the bed away from the wall before you put the "table" over it - so that you can walk around your table. My table backs up to a couch. The couch is on casters so that I can slide the couch out of the way when I need to get around the table.

Under the bed storage and closet organizer would porbably be good. Sewing desk looks like it will be a real beauty!!!! Shelf on the walls would also be great!
