Hello,
My husband is wokring in State Collage PA and wants me to fly up there for a long weekend sometime when the colros are changing. So my ? is this:
(1) When would be a good time to plan on coming up that way? When do the colors usually look their best?
(2) Are there any quilt shops in that area that I 'just have to go to?.... teehee :)
(3) if we could just see a couple of things while there what would they be? Yes, he has a rent car and we don't mind driving.
Thanks for the help!

I just got back from being in Pennsylvania. I went around Altoona and did see a couple of quilt shops, but don't remember the names. Could look at my receipts though.
I would google under "fabrics" or "quilting shops" to get a list of them around there.
Also, since I am not familiar with PA at all, I would list the cities where you may be going. I'm sure that someone on here can help! Perhaps even meet up with a couple, that's what I did.

My brother lives in Chester PA just outside of Philly. I am not sure of the quilt shops, but there is a lot to see there from the old mansions, historical sites, famous colleges. The late fall is when the trees change colors Nov. PA is a beautiful state to travel through.

Fall colors & leaf peeping varies throughout PA due to the many mountains. Best colors are usually October, but depends on the weather. Ask again in October!

It will depend if we have a hot dry summer or a cool wet summer.. Last year was cool and wet and we had some of the best colors every it was also early and they all seemed to pop at the same time. This year is setting up to be hot and dry so unless it cools off before Sep it may be a little later 2nd-3rd week in Oct and it would be more gradual.
It also depends where you are.
We get color change almost a full 2 weeks later then in the mountains and hour away.
I have never been to state collage so I dont know about the quilt shops and must see's. I hope you have a good visit and find some quilting thing to get into :D

State college is north of me but we usually have good leaves the 1st thru the 3rd week of October.
But as they say it depends on the weather!
my son will be 17 on oct 6th.
he was born 16 weeks early and the leaves had just started to change when I wen to the hospital on the 4th on the 7th they looked great on the 8th we had a thunderstorm and all the leaves fell! so much for fall! LOL
there are several quilt ships up that way.
try googling the state college chamber of commerce
it will have them listed

Hi I have never replied before but I love to read this board. There are a lot of things to see and do in PA. Penn's Cave is near State College. You tour a cave while riding in a boat, then there is a wildlife preserve by it. Also in Mifflinburg, PA there is a buggy museum, Hoover's quilt shop (they have a web site), Verna's fabric is also in Mifflinburg. Country Cupboard is in Lewisburg, great food and a very large store. If you want to drive then it would be good to go to Lanscaster PA. Amish buggy rides, good food, a lot of quilt shops, Millinum (spelling) Theater, and more. Look up website for Lancaster PA and quilt shops in Lancaster PA. A lot to do and see. There are also a lot of other quilt shops within driving area. Endless Mountains Quiltworks (EMQuiltworks.com)in Tunkhannock,Pa. They have an Airing of the Quilts on Oct.2. A lot of quilts are displayed on the houses, stores etc., a quilt show at one of the churches, a quilt show at the school and the quilt shop has a sale. It is only one day. If you chech out their website, you will gain more information. I don't know how far you want to drive but these places are great(hard on my purse). Have fun looking!

There is going to be a big quilt show in Philadelphia, Pa September 17th through the 19th. It is called the Pa, National Quilt Extravaganza XVI. A group of us will be going by bus the last day, Sunday 19th. Unfortunately, I do not think the leaves turn that early. You could always go for an extended stay!

Don't we need a frost for the leaves to change?
State College,PA is a very popular place. Decide now and get reservations. Homecoming week is booked at all venues for years ahead.
My daughter was there 30 years ago. Sorry that I don't know quilt shops.
I know you will enjoy. Best Wishes.
