My friend and I took 1 charm pack and some pieces of 80/20 Hobbs batting and this is what we made. They are done on the machine, reversible and fast! Charm pack is Birchtree Lane and the tutorial came from http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/p/tutorials.html
We added the 1/4" topping stitching around the mat for a more finished look.

Which tutorial on her website is it? There are a couple of different ones...the first one of hers is done by hand in the traditional way, but you said yours was done all by machine.
