I love your OBW, it's a mini I've never tried. About borders--I measure the quilt down the center of width and length and use those measurements for my borders.

When working on smaller quilts, even placemats, I have used an oversized back, put an oversized batting on top then the centre/pieced area. Then I stitch my border(s) on through all the layers, using the sew and flip method. I find this gives a very flat finish that does not need to have stitch in the ditch. You can then either bind as usual or bring the back forward and bind that way.
