I mentioned in another thread that my granddaughter is visiting for the week. She's 15 yrs old, has never sewn (mom doesn't even own a sewing machine!) and said at the beginning of the week that she didn't want to do it. She didn't even want to try. Well, yesterday, I got fed up with the tv on, told her to help me. She helped with the first one, I helped her with the 2nd one and she did the rest by herself!!! She even threaded the sewing machine by herself! This is a child they say is "slow", has ADD....uh huh.....she just needed a SEWING MACHINE!! ;) I'm so proud of her I could bust a seam!!! She's coming back this summer to make a quilt!

I have an ADD son who finishes in the 90th percentile. Meaning he is smarter than 90 percent of the population. Learning is a problem when it is hard to stay focused. You have given your granddaughter a priceless gift . . . her selfworth. Your patience and love for her can make the difference for her risking new and scary things. Remember that ole self-fulfllling prophecy? It sure does make a difference when we know someone believes in us and our abilities.
You rock!!!

She did a wonderful job with those!!! Maybe this summer she will want to make herself a little quilt!!

amma 03-25-2010 01:04 PM

I can't wait to see your quilt this summer :D:D:D

Sunny Days 03-25-2010 01:37 PM

Awesome job! What a fun summer she is going to have! Looking forward to seeing her quilt. :)

Sharon321 03-25-2010 01:58 PM

Most ADD kids can focus when they have something of interest. She probably was hesitant because she feared failure. She not only made pillowcases, she proved she can do it. Plus ADDpeople are very creative.

I am ADD and so are my sons, so I should know.

Sharon321 03-25-2010 02:02 PM

You know it just came to me. Perhaps this summer she could make pillowcases for the one millon pillowcase drive from American Patchwork and Quilting,

Marjpf 03-25-2010 02:10 PM

Great job - both Amanda and Grandmother! She learned a new skill and you were able to find her talents!

Wonderful gift for both of you.

amandasgramma 03-25-2010 04:09 PM

Thank you everyone! I got so excited I forgot to mention where we got the pattern!!! Thanks for reminding me. Yes, it's the Rolled Pillowcase pattern by Jeanne M. Butter at www.rainydayquiltschool.com. The pattern was interesting!!!! I thought she was crazy then VOILA, there's a pillowcase! LOL

barnbum 03-25-2010 04:12 PM

Throw the TV out the window when she comes. Take her shopping for fabric--then she'll be hooked and gone.

You are one fabulous grandma!

You have given a priceless gift, your Granddaughter will remember. Your time!

mimee4 03-25-2010 05:03 PM

Tell Amanda that we all support her. She did a great job on the pillowcases. Can't wait to see the quilt this summer.

littlehud 03-25-2010 05:13 PM

She did a wonderful job. Tell her to keep it up.

redquilter 03-25-2010 05:26 PM

They are so pretty. I love them all and Amanda did a fantastic job. What a gift you have given her - the reward of trying something new and the wonderful feeling of a job well done. Congrats to both of you.

sewnsewer2 03-25-2010 05:33 PM

Great pillowcases!

rkymtnquilter 03-25-2010 05:43 PM

Thanks for sharing the website. I'm going to have to try one of those with my daughter. She got married a year ago - never showed any interest in my quilting until recently....now we're having fun working on projects together! I think she's secretly hoping for my stash and quilt kits someday!! :) Smart girl!!

dkabasketlady 03-25-2010 06:43 PM

Great job Amanda!!! Kudos to you for turning off the TV and taking the time to show her how to sew!!! You're amazing and sew is your GD!!! I can't wait to see the quilt this summer!

Maggie_Sue 03-25-2010 06:47 PM

What a wonderful story and you are a very special Grandmother for taking the time to teach her!!!

craftybear 03-25-2010 10:37 PM

Wow, that is awesome you got her to sew! I bet if she had a sewing machine at home she would use it. She would have fun making purses, totes, quilts etc.

Karen Craftybear

rkymtnquilter 03-26-2010 05:54 AM

I know she will thank you some day! What a special gift to share with her - the gift of quilting! :) It'll be fun to see what she's created about 5-10 years down the line!

hokieappmom 03-26-2010 06:01 AM

Way to go to both of you! Great job. And I know how you feel to get her interested. My 23-year old daughter just asked me a few weeks ago to teach her to sew. I was thrilled. I'd about given up on that. Isn't it wonderful to share something you enjoy so much?!

Ditter43 03-26-2010 06:16 AM

Yea Grandma!!!! Sometimes all they need is a little push and a lot of encouragement! Way to go Grandma!!!

retired teacher 03-26-2010 02:14 PM

I am an old special needs teacher and I am very proud of your granddaughter. One of my fondest teaching memories is when I taught life skills and my students learned to quilt simple quilts for themselves.

Ducky 03-26-2010 02:16 PM

Well, Amanda did a beautiful job! She may have found her nitch.

Babs194068 03-27-2010 03:12 AM

She did a great job you should bust at the seams.

Luv2sew4fun 03-27-2010 04:49 AM

Never underestimate a child with special needs! They are awesome! I teach special education and there is not a day that goes by that I don’t marvel about how truly intelligent and clever they are! Sewing is a wonderful outlet for them… They work (mostly) alone, can focus on the task at hand and they have something to show for their efforts!

Dorothy of Kansas 03-27-2010 05:03 AM

She did a wonderful job and I'm so proud of you for taking the time and patience to teach her how and at the same time increase her self esteem!!

tadpoles_62 03-27-2010 06:00 AM

brings tears to my eyes , :D
