cathedral window - 50 years later!
4 Attachment(s)
I posted a new bedrunner and valance a few days ago and peeking temptingly from the corner of the picture was a cathedral window quilt my grandmother pieced in the 1960's. I used to spend quite a bit of time with her and remember her sitting on the couch - in the winter months only - and working on this quilt. As she got near the end of this long-term project she told me in no uncertain terms that if I let my grandchildren play outside with it she would come back and haunt me! As you can see - it has been given a pride of place and my grandchildren do not go near it! It was made for my mother who had it on her bed for several years, but when she redecorated it came to me.

beautiful quilt ... I can see that it was truly made with love .... and lovingly displayed.

what a gorgeous work of art! i love the way you have displayed it. in the first picture, it looks like a dress. can you imagine having a dress made from CW blocks? :)
That is absolutely breathtaking!! Thanks so much for sharing it. I especially love how you've displayed it, to me it looks like a very elegant gown that just flows and flows.
wow, look at all those groovy fabrics
I love these quilts. but I don't think I would ever have the patience to make one!
This is gorgeous. Wish I had the skill and patience to make one!

What a beautiful treasure you have from your grandmother. You can see all the love that went into all that beautiful handwork. I love the way you have it displayed.
Nice display.....
Love it. My aunt just brought me the start of two cathedral window quilts--hers and my grandmothers--along with 200 foundation squares for me to complete! The date on the box is 1979. I've been working on them. LOL
Amazing! So amazing!
What a unique way to display a quilt! It is absolutely beautiful and how nice to have it displayed so that you will think of your grandmother often.
A gorgeous family heirloom elegantly displayed! Enjoyed your story!

very clever use of the quilt, I love it.
Really like the way you are displaying your beautiful quilt. You know she will never haunt you. lol
Absolutely gorgeous. Is it displayed as an angel or simply a dress? I think I see angel wings there above the sleeves. I envy you.
That quilt is gorgeous. The colors are so vibrant.
thank you so much, it is wonderful! love the hanger too
How wonderful to have such a great memory of your DGM and have it proudly displayed. It is a fabulous CW.
EDIT: personaly, I would love to be haunted by my DGM.:) peace |
Awesome! Beautiful quilt!
Absolutely gorgeous
The way you have it displayed really shows it off! Love it!
Really beautiful!!!
What a beautiful treasure, in so many ways!
The wooden hanger is a bow. Never thought about it being a dress or angel - just a quilt display to me. The weight of it does make it drape nicely. My MeMaw does haunt me if having her words in my head, her model in how I shaped my life and her memories in my heart count. Rarely a day goes by that her influence doesn't show - and she's been gone nearly 30 years. So much of what I do with my grands is based on what she did with me.
However, they will NOT be watching me make a cathedral window quilt! |
It's gorgeous and looks great hanging there!
Gorgeous quilt!
beautiful I used to watch my mom work on one which has dissapeared so this past year I started one. It is a slow process but very rewarding. I think my 4 children may only get pillows at the rate I am going! You have enspired me to pull out my box of supplies even in this heat!
Oh, what a very clever way to hang something so special! I love it!
They sure don't make them like they used to! That is lovely. Thanks for sharing

Jan, I'm so glad that you inherited this quilt. The memories that you have of her & this quilt are what you are cherishing. What you wrote was very touching & your thoughts of her will always be your best ones. I love the way she did it & your display just really sets it off.
For those wanting to make a Cathedral Window, go to youtube. There's several tutes there, some by hand, some by machine. All are interesting. |
Your grandmother was a talented and patient quiltmaker. That is simply gorgeous and I LOVE the way you display it. Looks tremendous.
What a strange hanger ... it looks like a headless woman standing there! Otherwise, a very pretty quilt.
