finished my (2) Appliqued Connecticut quilts

3 Attachment(s)
I was commissioned to make 2 appliqued quilts for a house built in 1785 in Connecticut- been working on them for 3 months- finally finished the binding on the second one today , YEA! was asked to wash & dry them when I finished so they would have that (crinkly) look, so, as soon as the second one came out of the dryer I took the pics- ready to get them sent out & move on to other projects. i'm pretty happy with the way they turned out- my first time working with all solids- they are 68" x 96" (measurements requested) there were some challenges. :)

no, it is not needle turn- they are machine appliqued and machine quilted (also, recipient's request) she figured machine would be (faster) and cost less--true on both accounts. she had first seen pictures of my wool backyard gathering quilt which was hand appliqued- loved it but wanted something in cottons, done by machine and she wanted 2 which were similar to each other- same fabrics * turkey red, olive green, gold and white* , simplified- not as (involved) as the wool one had been- so these are what I came up with. :) they are heading her way today.

Beautiful quilts!! They deserve to be on display!

For not being your cup of tea they came out beautifully. Can you elaborate the source of the applique patterns and the technique? I see you said machine applique but are they raw edge fused or prepared with a seam allowance turned under and if turned under what technique did you use? I am really getting into turned under applique (not raw edge fused) and like to explore all my options.

craftynell 09-12-2013 10:16 AM

Beautiful quilt!!!

crafty pat 09-12-2013 10:24 AM

Beautiful quilt I so admire you who do such beautiful hand work. My DM made a lot of appliqued quilts by hand all so pretty.

bnndr 09-12-2013 10:43 AM

the 12" blocks around the center are applique blocks from the 'backyard gathering' wool quilt I made (pattern called= backyard gathering from Lisa Bongean (primitive gatherings) the borders, centers, ect are 'loosely' based on other appliques I saw in magazines- I just fused fabric, drew vines, flowers, leaves as I needed them. so- to answer your other questions- the appliques are fused, raw edge- stitched down with small blanket stitch- silk threads.

That is beautiful applique work! I love the colors, so colonial. And the sawtooth border too!
