First attempt at making a patchwork quilt

2 Attachment(s)
Hi
I've finished Birdie Box Quilt. I've never made a quilt before. I wanted it to look like the home made patchwork bed throws we had as children, 50 years ago. It probably needs a bit more quilting, but 'Less is more' and I may get carried away and overdo it. Be gentle with me. Top has the larger squares. I patchworked top and bottom. Hides a multitude of sins.

It looks great and perfect for snuggling under. Really like the birdhouses.

All I saw was that wonderful bird and bird house fabric! I think you did a fantastic job for the first quilt and they say practice makes perfect, so don't stop now and have fun with what you make! I agree that "less is more" when it comes to quilting and did the same thing on my first few. I'm just now beginning to get a bit more adventurous after nearly a year with lots of practicing on sandwich scraps.

Great first quilt! My first quilt is still unfinished in a closet for the past 40+ years! Just too painful to look at much less put the binding on.

Annie68 10-04-2012 12:43 PM

Hey, you're off to a great start, I like it. Good color choices.

Jingle 10-04-2012 01:31 PM

You are ambitious for your 1st project... way to go! What comes next?

PaperPrincess 10-04-2012 02:22 PM

Love it! I agree that the less quilting the cozier the quilt, but just make sure that you have followed the minimum quilting distance for the batting (wadding) that you have used. Should be on the package or the shop owner should be able to tell you.

QuiltnNan 10-04-2012 03:11 PM

congrats on a fine finish to your first quilt

Baloonatic 10-04-2012 03:50 PM

That is SO cute! What a great job!

Bluebell 10-05-2012 03:30 AM

I just want to say "Thank you" to everyone for all your kind comments on my 'Birdie House Quilt'. I have learned so much by reading this site and looking at the very beautiful quilts you all produce. I am so fired up and am going to make some more quilts, this time for my grandchildren. Meanwhile, I shall practice more of the quilting. It makes a change from my usual knitting, crocheting and normal dressmaking and repairs.Thank you so much and you have given me much more confidence.

You are very brave, posting the very first quilt you made. Congrats, your pride is only topped by your results. Keep up the good work and from one newbie to another, keep reading the posts here. I have learned so much from the experts who discuss quilting on the digest. Maybe someday I can be as brave and post a picture of something I have made.

Nancygeddes 10-06-2012 05:57 AM

No need to be "gentle with you" compliments abound already from other quilters. It is wonderful and if this examples a 'first' quilt you are already well on the way to being an awesome quilt maker!!! Great job, well done!
